ORTEC®   Training Course

Practical Gamma Spectroscopy using Germanium Detectors and GammaVision Software.

About This Course

This course is designed for beginning to intermediate gamma spectroscopists using germanium detectors and GammaVision software. This course begins with setup procedures for the detectors, electronics, computer, and software, followed by instruction on all aspects of the GammaVision interface. Other topics covered are the construction of nuclide libraries and analysis parameter files, and the setup of GammaVision for dedicated tasks.


This is an interactive class - the students really have to play with spectra and get the right answers. Each participant will have access to a computer supplied by ANSTO and ORTEC software. Each student will receive a book of the class notes with space for notes and a CD with the examples to use later for more experience.

Cost

$3,400 per person. Students will be provided with course notes, access to a computer and software for use during the course. Lunches, morning and afternoon teas will be provided. Students need to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.

 

Cancellation liability

ORTEC reserves the right to cancel classes for any reason

ORTEC’s liability is limited to the return of the tuition fee only

ORTEC will not reimburse registrants for any travel or hotel cancellation fees or penalties

 

Max. no. of students

The course is limited to a maximum of 16 participants. The course also has a minimum attendee requirement. If this is not met by the registration deadline, the course will be cancelled, and you will be notified.

Section overview


The Facility Safety Section is responsible for regulation of all prescribed radiation facilities and nuclear installations. This includes the assessment of new and amended licence applications, compliance monitoring via an inspection program and producing regulatory guidance. Major installations include the OPAL reactor, radiopharmaceuticals production, research facilities and the planned facility for immobilisation of liquid intermediate level waste at the Lucas Heights Science and Technology Centre. The Facility Safety Section is also responsible for coordination of ARPANSA’s efforts to prepare for receiving a licence application for the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility (NRWMF), including associated outreach activities.


 

Primary purpose of the role


Under broad direction from the Branch Head, the Director Facility Safety is responsible for regulation of prescribed radiation facilities and nuclear installations in the Commonwealth. This includes assessment of new and amended licence applications, compliance monitoring via an inspection program and producing regulatory guidance. The role will oversee the coordination of major projects such as the NRWMF through the Major Projects Manager.


 

Job specific capabilities


The successful applicant will have highly developed managerial skills with a demonstrated record of successfully driving change and being able to respond flexibly and promptly to organisational changes. The applicant must also be capable of developing and motivating staff to successfully contribute to the business outcomes of the Branch and the Agency.

The applicant must have a degree in science or engineering from an Australian university or alternative, or have comparable qualifications or equivalent experience. The applicant must also have excellent communication and consultation skills and expertise in writing scientific and/or technical documents.
You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate and internationally as required. The position is a designated security assessed position that will require you to successfully undertake and maintain a security clearance.

I welcome today’s Joint Statement of President Trump of the United States and Chairman Kim of the DPRK at the Singapore Summit which includes the DPRK’s commitment towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
 
The IAEA will closely follow the negotiations to be held between the two countries to implement the outcomes of the US-DPRK Summit.
 
The IAEA stands ready to undertake any verification activities in the DPRK that it may be requested to conduct by the countries concerned, subject to authorization by the IAEA’s Board of Governors.

ARPANSA RHSAC call for nominations

The Radiation Health and Safety Advisory Council (the Council) is currently calling for nominees to nine part-time Member positions.
 
The Council is established under the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act 1998 as an advisory body to the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA).
 
The role of the Council is to identify emerging issues relating to radiation protection and nuclear safety, including matters of major concern to the community, and to advise the CEO of the ARPANSA on those matters.
 
Members of the Council are part-time appointments for a period of up to three years, made by the Assistant Minister for Health in consultation with the CEO of ARPANSA. Members are expected to attend three meetings each year, with each meeting taking between 1.5 to 2 days. Members receive sitting fees, as determined by the Remuneration Tribunal.
 
The terms of the nine expiring Member positions end on 31 March 2018. The Council is looking to maintain a diverse membership to achieve the statutory responsibilities of the Council.
