The Senior Regulatory Officer, Safety Systems is responsible for the maintenance of the RSB Quality Management System and will perform the duties of the RSB Quality Officer. The role will also have compliance monitoring responsibilities including planning, managing, and undertaking inspections of ARPANSA licence holders. The role will be responsible for management of the regulatory content on the ARPANSA website in collaboration with the Office of the CEO and will review outgoing correspondence and reports for quality assurance purposes. 

Key accountabilities

  • Perform the role of the RSB Quality Officer, including maintenance of the RSB Quality System within the ARPANSA Management System.
  • Lead, manage and undertake inspections, audits and other activities associated with ARPANSA’s regulatory functions with regards to nuclear installations, prescribed radiation facilities and sources.
  • Contribute to high level strategic and technical policy development, including the development of national and international radiation protection, nuclear safety and security standards and guidelines.
  • Review outgoing correspondence and reports from RSB to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Participate in the development of the ARPANSA inspector training and competencies program.
  • Oversee and maintain currency of regulatory content on the ARPANSA website.

The successful applicant will have an excellent understanding of the regulatory environment in which radiation is used in the Commonwealth, state and territory jurisdictions.

The applicant must have a degree in science or engineering from an Australian university or other comparable qualifications which are considered appropriate for the position.

You must have excellent oral and written communication skills, including the writing of scientific and/or technical documents. You must also have a keen eye for detail to identify errors, inconsistencies and weaknesses in arguments within regulatory reports and publications. You will prepare and maintain regulatory content for the public website. 

You must have the ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment with a high degree of professionalism and the ability to provide/receive effective feedback. In addition, you must have the ability to develop productive working relationships with ARPANSA staff, stakeholders, and other government agencies.

You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate and internationally as required. The position is a designated security assessed position that will require you to successfully undertake and maintain a security clearance.

Selection criteria

  1. Operational or regulatory experience in activities relating to radiation protection and/or nuclear safety or other high hazard industry.
  2. Highly developed critical thinking and proven attention to detail especially in documentation.
  3. Operational experience in managing and maintaining quality systems with successful outcomes.
  4. Capacity to review reports which reinforce consistency in meeting regulatory objectives.
  5. Ability to provide effective feedback whilst sustaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  6. Ability to demonstrate teamwork within an innovative environment which prioritises continuous improvement.
