ARPANSA is seeking input from Australian stakeholders on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) draft Safety Requirements DS548 – Predisposal Management of Radioactive Waste.

The draft is a revision of the existing IAEA General Safety Requirements GSR Part 5 – Predisposal Management of Radioactive Waste and has now progressed to the Member State consultation stage.

ARPANSA will coordinate Australia's submission to the IAEA and is inviting radiation protection professionals and other interested stakeholders to provide feedback to help ensure the Australian response reflects relevant national priorities and expertise.

Feedback must be submitted through the ARPANSA consultation portal. Please note that, as the consultation timeframe is set by the IAEA, the closing date cannot be extended.

The Australasian Radiation Protection Society notes with great sadness the passing of Professor Roger Clarke CBE, FRCR, FSRP, BSc, MSc, PhD, DUniv, whose influence on radiological protection extended strongly across Australia, New Zealand, and the wider Asia–Pacific region. Through his leadership of the International Commission on Radiological Protection and his engagement with professional societies and regulators in this region, Sir Roger made a lasting contribution to the development of radiological protection practice that continues to underpin standards and guidance used in Australasia today. His legacy will be felt for generations.

ARPS extends its sincere condolences to Sir Roger’s family, friends, and colleagues around the world.

ARPANSA is seeking feedback on the IAEA Draft Safety Guide DS538: Long-Term Post-Remediation Management of Areas Affected by Past Activities or Events. The consultation is open until 25 May 2026.

This comprehensive five-day course is designed to support first responder agencies in effective preparedness and enhancing their response in radiological and nuclear emergency situations.

 Personnel that have either direct or indirect first responder responsibilities in radiological and/or nuclear emergency situations:
