Keith Baldry has announced that on 4 February 2021 the Radiation Protection and Control Bill 2021 passed its final stages in the Legislative Council and will now become an Act of Parliament.

This is a landmark step for radiation protection in South Australia. Among many reforms and improvements, the new Act introduces a general duty of care, and a risk based harms approach including establishing the offence of causing radiation harm. It also introduces tools such as Orders to enable more effective regulatory approaches. The new Act enables us to implement important national commitments such as for security of radioactive sources. It will enable us to move to more modern, risk based regulatory approaches.

I would like to acknowledge the contribution from the EPA radiation and legislative policy teams who have effectively drafted the Bill and steered it through Parliament. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of EPA staff who have since left the organisation. The next steps include formulating regulations under the Act, which will include a consultation process.

Keith is the Director of Science and Information at the South Australian Environment Protection Authority

ARPS members are have contributed consultation on the Bill, and look forward to engaging with EPA to develop the Regulations. ARPS would like to congratulate the SA EPA and their staff for achieving this milestone.

ARPS invites a young career professional to participate in a round table discussion on the topic Radiation Protection Future and Our Dreams

ARPS is looking for an early career professional (under 40 years of age) with demonstrated interest and contributions in the field of radiation protection. The selected person will be nominated to take part in a 60 minute regional web round table discussion on the topic of Radiation Protection and Our Dreams. Two other nominations in the round table will also be early career professionals selected by the Japan Health Physics Society and the Korean Association of Radiation Protection. They will be accompanied by Dr Haruyuki Ogino, Bo Lindell Medallist announced for 2021. Bo Lindell award is announced by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) for a young career scientist for exemplary contribution to the promotion of radiological protection.

The round table is scheduled in January 2021. To be selected, please apply via a return email by 17 December 2020.  Kindly attach a resume and 1 page of information which demonstrates your scientific, and professional contributions in the field of radiation protection, including service to ARPS.

This round table is an opportunity to broaden your professional footprint and network on a regional scale, and also provide motivation for other early career professionals. Professor Fujio Fujibuchi, the meeting organiser, is expected to write about the views expressed during the round table as a publication in the Journal of Radiation Protection and Research.

Study results webinar: national database to improve impact assessments for life of mine activities

NERA, together with our project partners Flinders University, BHP, Heathgate resources, ARPANSA, ANSTO, JRHC Enterprises & OZ Minerals invite you to join us for this webinar as we release the first results from an Australian collaborative research project that is helping to improve and reduce uncertainties with environmental radiological impact assessments in the energy and mining sectors.

    About the webinar
Please join us and project leads Dr Gillian Hirth (ARPANSA), Jim Hodros (JRHC Enterprises), Dr Angel Rea (Flinders University) and Tim Duff (NERA) share industry learnings and key results of a collaborative two-year research project, which conducted fundamental research into the levels of radiation in flora, fauna and soils in Australia's arid environments. This is important data that underpins the understanding of potential radiological impacts from mining on flora and fauna.

The results of this joint industry–research–national authority project contribute to the national database of radiation concentration ratios of flora, fauna and soils in areas of Australia not previously surveyed. The database will be an invaluable resource for industries in the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia that are required to assess their environmental radiological impact, and will improve both the environmental approval and mine closure processes.

We are writing to remind you of ARPANSA’s public consultation on the draft ‘Standard for Limiting Exposure to Radiofrequency Fields – 100 KHz to 300 GHz’. Given the importance of this standard and to ensure that stakeholders had adequate time to submit feedback, the original closing date for the consultation of 30 September 2020 was extended to 21 October 2020.

As you have been identified as an important stakeholder with expertise and/or interests in the area of RF EME protection, ARPANSA would like to encourage you, if you have not done so already, to make a submission on the draft ‘Standard for Limiting Exposure to Radiofrequency Fields – 100 KHz to 300 GHz’ (RPS S-1).

We would like to thank all of the stakeholders that have already provided a submission to the consultation.

Details on the consultation including the new draft standard and instructions on how to make a submission are available at https://www.arpansa.gov.au/standard-limiting-exposure-radiofrequency-fields-100-khz-300-ghz-rps-s-1

We would like to thank you in advance for your participation in this important consultation.

    Kind regards

    Dr Ken Karipidis
