    Job Description

    As part of the Australian Radiation team, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Leading the technical, operational and financial performance of the consulting business.
    • Actively provide technical governance to PRMS division, sales and calibration lab while being responsible to maintain its NATA accreditation.
    • Actively grow the client base through interaction with new and existing clients utilising the client services, calibration and sales teams.
    • Assist the Business Manager with advancing business by identifying and driving business opportunities to reduce cost or improve revenue
    • Successfully manage projects to resolution within specified timeframes and in accordance with regulatory guidelines, SGS ARS Quality Manual, Operating Procedures and Codes of Conduct
    • Provide advice pertaining to irradiating apparatus, radioactive substances and shielding design to clients
    Qualifications
    • Solid understanding of health physics, environmental physics, PRMS, calibrations and analytical services
    • Solid understanding of Victorian DHHS regulatory framework including other jurisdictions.
    • Good initiative and experience in business development to identify business opportunities
    • Previous managerial experience, including people development
    • Physics degree or other relevant degree
    • Previous relevant experience in the field
    • Working knowledge of all legislation, regulations, associated standards and codes of practice relevant to radiation health and in particular Victorian Radiation Health requirements
    • Sound knowledge and experience applying the techniques of radiation monitoring, surveying, transport and disposal

    About the position

    The Health Physics Surveyor provides hands-on safety advice and monitoring services to a range of operational areas to ensure the safety of staff, contractors and visitors; and compliance with ANSTO’s WHS Standards and Practices, and with regulatory requirements.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Monitor and measure radiation levels and advise on radiological hazards, provide ventilation safety advice, log information to ensure QA compliance,
    • Provide advice to different levels of personnel on the most effective practical radiation protection measures to be taken across a large and varied range of situations.  This advice is based on defined policies and procedures within a set range of parameters,
    • Deliver basic radiation safety training to other ANSTO staff, including trainee safety officers and describe work procedures to non-ANSTO visitors,                 
    • Provide advice on radiation safety procedures to be incorporated into divisional documents, including assisting in the preparation of these work instructions while following safety standards, procedures and instructions.

    Skills and Experience
    • Tertiary qualifications (commonly Trade certificate) in relevant engineering or science discipline or relevant ANSTO experience,
    • Knowledge of radiation measurement methods,
    • Organisational skills and meticulous approach to work with the ability to plan and organise tasks effectively for self,

    About the position
    The Personal Dosimetry Officer provides leadership and coordination of ANSTO’s personal dosimetry service (external and internal) to ANSTO staff members, contractors and visitors. This position is subject matter expert for all aspects of personal radiation dosimetry from external and internal exposure pathways.  The role ensures the accurate formal measurement and record keeping of personal ionising radiation exposure at ANSTO. It is also responsible for identifying, assessing and developing future measurement techniques as they become available for use at ANSTO for ionising and non-ionising radiation exposure situations.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Lead and mentor Occupational Hygienists, Health Physicists and Dosimetry Technicians in the provision, development, and continuous improvement of Personal Dosimetry Services and provide authoritative and expert advice to support the achievement of best practice.
    • Plans and supervises the management, calibration, maintenance of plant and equipment and services associated with the Personal Dosimetry Services including the in-vivo and in-vitro capabilities (Whole Body Monitor, Thyroid organ monitoring and Radiation Bioassay), passive external dosimetry, personal and area air sampling for measuring radioactivity.
    • Management of exposure record keeping and reporting systems within the Personal Dosimetry Services and forwarding ionising radiation dose records to the Australian National Radiation Dose Register (ANRDR).
    • Ownership and application of relevant ANSTO Radiation Protection standards, policies and guides as part of ANSTO’s WHS MS in relation to the field of dosimetry and quality assurance.  Ensure that these standards, policies and guides are appropriate, compliant with regulatory requirements and take account of international best practice.
    • Provide expert advice as part of the Safety and Reliability Assurance (SRA) process, and to the Reactor Assurance Committee (RAC); coordinate safety and radiation protection assessments and audits; and perform and assist in radiation and safety assessments, nuclear safety, and risk assessments and their review.

    Skills and Experience

    • Degree, or equivalent in Physics, Radiation Protection or other related discipline.
    • Extensive demonstrated experience of ionising radiation monitoring methods, systems, practices and equipment including the ability to manage related projects from conception through to implementation.
    • Extensive experience with the use and calibration of ionising radiation monitoring equipment.
    • Detailed knowledge of the principles of radiation detection, measurement and instrumentation, with highly developed analytical/problem solving skills.
    • Extensive current knowledge of national and international standards and best practice in personal radiation dosimetry.
    • Knowledge of quality management systems applicable to dosimetry laboratory operations.

    About the position

    As part of the ANSTO Detection & Imaging (AD&I) business unit, the Senior Physicist will use their subject matter expertise to undertake a lead role to deliver scientific & technical advice, develop advanced radiation detection technologies and support the commercial objectives of the unit. The technology development activities will fall within a newly formed business unit and will therefore have a strong commercialisation focus. The position takes a proactive role in developing team members and is the technical point of contact for external clients.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Apply high level specialist knowledge and experience in radiation detection physics to assist in the development of new radiation detection concepts.
    • Provide expert scientific knowledge to ensure the trusted advice and specialised service provided by the team meets customer requirements including those related to national security.
    • Taking a leading role in solving highly complex, conceptual scientific problems by seeking knowledge and alternative solutions and developing new techniques, methods and experimental capabilities.
    • Provide technical leadership, guidance and support to staff within the team with the overall aim of advancing the team capabilities.

    In addition to performing all Band 6 accountabilities, the Band 7 role includes these additional accountabilities
    • When required, manage human resources through selection, training, development, performance management and review, recognition and guidance of managers and staff.  Ensure the sustainability and knowledge retention of the unit through succession and workforce planning, talent management and employee development activities.
    • Support the CTO, AD&I, in establishing the strategic direction and technical vision for the business unit.
    • Drive the development of original and innovative ideas directed at enhancing the current state of the art ionising radiation detection capabilities for a wide range of applications areas including national security

    Skills and Experience
    Band 6

    • PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or equivalent experience.
    • Subject matter expertise in the interaction of ionising radiation with matter and its detection.
    • Expert knowledge of ionising radiation measurement techniques and the associated nucleonic equipment.
    • Significant experience in developing innovative solutions for technical, scientific or engineering problems.
    • Significant experience in one or more of the following: advanced measurement concepts, systems engineering, mathematical inverse problems, machine learning and radiation transport simulations.
    • Experience in developing technologies for nuclear industry, safeguards, non-proliferation and national security applications, would be an advantage.


    Band 7
    • Minimum 4 years working as Senior Physicist (band 6) or equivalent experience
    • Demonstrated capability to independently manage substantial project tasks to successful completion
    • Demonstrated ability to independently and responsibly perform Band 7 accountabilities and apply required knowledge, skills and experience for the Band 7 position including:
    • PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or equivalent experience and at least 5 years relevant experience in the detection of ionising radiation
    • Domestically and internationally recognised expert in the interaction of ionising radiation with matter and its detection
    • Extensive experience in client relationships, meeting client expectations and operating within deadlines;
    • Extensive experience in developing innovative solutions for technical, scientific or engineering problems.
