Radon in Workplaces – Practical Implications of New IAEA Guidelines

Presented by: Jim Hondros

Jim Hondros is currently the President of the Australasian Radiation Protection Society with more than 35 years experience in radiation protection, community relations, health, safety and environmental management in the mining industry. In recent years, Jim has worked internationally with the International Atomic energy Agency providing assistance in countries developing their radiological protection systems.

This talk will provide an overview of the work that Jim was involved in as part of an IAEA working group that developed a new guideline document on Radon in Workplaces. Radon and, more accurately, radon decay products, are significant and usually underestimated hazards in workplaces. Applying the system of protection for existing and planned exposure situations will require a rethink of approaches and lead to more workplace assessments. The IAEA document is in final stages of consultation and production and Jim will provide an overview of the development process and next steps.
