The key duties of the position include:
- Plan, conduct and manage research and monitoring projects related to the assessment of radiological impacts to people and the environment from uranium mining operations and site rehabilitation in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory.
- Apply sound judgement and technical expertise to determine field sampling and laboratory analysis requirements to meet environmental research and monitoring objectives, and undertake field- and laboratory-based work as required to collect and analyse samples.
- Evaluate complex datasets of radionuclide and other information and apply data analysis tools for assessing radiation doses to people and the environment from uranium mining operations and site rehabilitation.
- Manage and mentor staff.
- Communicate research and monitoring results to key stakeholders and the broader scientific community, including publication of high-quality papers in peer-reviewed journals as lead author.
- Provide expert technical advice on regulatory applications for uranium mining and other actions consistent with national and international standards for radiation protection.
- Provide strategic direction to the environmental radioactivity work program and contribute to the work of other research programs in ERISS.
What we are looking for
Knowledge and experience
- Expert knowledge of radioactive decay processes and radiation exposure pathways relevant to uranium mining.
- Expert knowledge of national and international best practice recommendations for radiation protection of the public and the environment.
- Experience conducting radiological impact assessments for the public and the environment, preferably in a uranium mining context.
- Experience managing staff.
- Experience leading and managing scientific research projects and associated resources.
- Proven record of high-quality research papers in the field of radioecology and/or radiation protection.
Skills and capabilities
- Leadership skills that inspire a good sense of teamwork and achieve results.
- Ability to manage staff, resources, timelines and budgets.
- Ability to train and mentor staff to build capability and capacity in radiological impact assessment.
- Ability to establish and foster research collaborations with other government agencies, industry and/or universities.
- Ability to represent SSB nationally and internationally at scientific forums and on expert working groups.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and as part of a larger multidisciplinary environmental research institute.
- Ability to plan and undertake field work in remote locations for durations of up to a week at a time.
- Highly developed technical writing skills as well as the ability to produce plain English summaries of technical information.
- Ability to communicate science to technical and non-technical audiences.
- A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from an Australian University or qualification of equivalent standard from an Australian or overseas university, or other qualification appropriate to the duties.
- Relevant research experience in an area of science relevant to the role as well as professional experience and publication record in radioecology, radiation protection or a related discipline.
