The Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS) is proud to be the host society for the 18th International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) International Congress, to be held in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, in 2032

IRPA 18 in Darwin will bring together radiation protection professionals from around the world to share practical solutions, new research and best practice, while showcasing the unique landscapes and culture of Australia’s Top End.

Interim Organising Committee – IRPA 18 Darwin 2032

The following ARPS members currently form the Interim Committee overseeing early planning for IRPA 18 in Darwin:

Roadmap to IRPA 18 in 2032

The following indicative timeline outlines major milestones on the way to IRPA 18. Activities and dates will be refined as planning progresses and in consultation with IRPA.

  • 2025–2028
    • Interim planning phase: establish foundations, deliver an interim workplan, and prepare transition to the formal IRPA Congress Organising Committee structure.
    • Maintain central communications (this page + irpa18.com) and publish milestone updates.
  • 2026
    • Complete preliminary development and delivery budgets (target: June 2026).
    • Progress early venue, supplier and service-planning discussions to inform budgets and feasibility.
    • Continue stakeholder engagement and early planning activities as required.
  • 2027
    • IRPA Executive venue inspection in Darwin (timing to be confirmed; currently discussed as possibly May 2027).
    • Identify and nominate Congress Lead(s) (target: September 2027).
    • Prepare materials and engagement plan for IRPA17 milestone (Valencia, 2028).
  • May 2028 (IRPA 17, Valencia, Spain)
    • Congress Lead presentation to IRPA / Associate Societies.
    • IRPA milestone: confirmation of bid success / location approval (Darwin) and transition steps to the formal IRPA congress organising structure.
    • Establish core committees (e.g., Organising, Program, Sponsorship/Exhibition) as required following confirmation.
  • 2029
    • Appoint a Professional Conference Organiser (PCO) and establish a Congress Office function.
    • Progress program development, sponsorship planning, and operational preparations in line with the confirmed governance structure.
  • 2030
    • First conference announcement.
    • Publish initial participation information (program development approach, sponsorship/exhibition “coming soon”, and travel planning guidance).
  • 2031
    • Develop and confirm detailed program structure and operational plans (sessions, speakers, logistics, social program).
    • Prepare systems and processes for abstracts, registration, and sponsor/exhibitor onboarding (timing to be confirmed).
  • January 2032
    • Publish preliminary program.
    • Finalise key operational readiness activities (venue planning, suppliers, staffing and volunteer planning).
  • May/June 2032 — Congress & Legacy
    • Deliver IRPA 18 in Darwin.
    • Post-Congress: reporting, financial acquittal, proceedings arrangements, and legacy activities for the Australasian radiation protection community.
