    About the position
    The Radiopharmaceutical Chemist reports to the Senior Radiochemist. The responsibilities include taking part in research and development programs with commercial and research outcomes.
    The Radiopharmaceutical Chemist has skills in the area of synthetic chemistry and analytical measurements and separation and is heavily involved in all aspects of the synthetic chemistry section and drug synthesis laboratory with emphasis in metal complexation. This position is also heavily focused on analytical processes involving NMR, Mass Spectroscopy, HPLC, FTIR, UV and other analyses.
    As a requirement you must hold Australian Citizenship to apply for the role as this is within a Government department. Applicants may have to complete a pre-employment medical and complete a thorough security check which can take several weeks.


    Skills & experience:
    PhD in Organic/Synthetic/Medicinal Chemistry or related discipline
    Experience working within a research focused lab
    Experience in the synthesis of metal complexation, ligand development and separation chemistry
    Sound knowledge and experience with organic/analytical techniques including NMR, HPLC and mass spectrometry
    Track record of publications in chemical research will be highly regarded
    Experience with handling hazardous materials
    Experience following SOPs, OHS instructions and quality guidelines

    The role 

    Reporting to the Director, Radiation Health Unit, you will perform an integral application and registration review, quality assurance and investigations support role to assist the Radiation Health Unit in meeting compliance with the provisions of the Radiation Safety Act 1999 and other relevant legislation and regulation.

    You will:

    • Perform radiation source registration and data quality assurance checks, and rectify issues identified
    • Assess standard registration applications to acquire or relocate radiation sources, and prepare and escalate complex applications for senior staff to consider
    • Track and monitor inter-jurisdictional movements of radiation sources and generate high quality radiation health reports
    • Assist Public Health Inspectors with written notifications, data or advice to support Radiation Safety Act 1999 compliance or enforcement activities.

    About the position

    The primary objective of the Radiochemistry Laboratory Technician is to support the research and operational requirements of the radiochemical laboratories and instrument laboratories that form Radioanalytical Chemistry (RAC) within Nuclear Stewardship by preparing samples and operating analytical equipment for the measurement of radioactivity in environmental samples and ensuring smooth and effective operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities.

    Duties and responsibilities
     

    • The Radiochemistry Laboratory Technician reports to the RAC Manager as well as respective laboratory managers.
    • Under instruction of an experienced radiochemist, assist in radiochemical separation and purification of actinides and other radionuclides to accurately quantify the activity and identify radionuclides in environmental samples for the purpose of research and site assessment.
    • Prepare high quality alpha, beta and gamma sample measurement sources under instruction of an experienced radiochemist.
    • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as titration equipment, analytical balances, high speed centrifuge, water purification systems, pH meters and micropipettes to ensure equipment and facilities are well maintained, and operating correctly and safely with minimal down-time.
    • Maintain and clean labware and lab facilities.
    • Practice good laboratory housekeeping, ensure laboratory cleanliness is upheld and adequate stock of chemicals and consumables is maintained.

     Skills and Experience
     
    • A Certificate IV with relevant experience or Diploma qualification in Science.
    • Practical experience working within a chemical or analytical laboratory environment.
    • Technical laboratory skills in chemistry or radiochemistry.
    • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and establish productive relationships.
