Dr Stefania Peracchi is the Irradiations Team Lead at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), within the Centre for Accelerator Science. Her expertise includes space radiation, radiation dosimetry and the investigation of radiation effects on materials, electronics and biological systems.
Stefania completed her PhD at the University of Wollongong, focusing on silicon-based microdosimetry for radiation protection in space and aviation. Her research has involved international collaborations and the development of experimental capabilities to better understand the effects of the space radiation environment.
In 2024, Stefania received international recognition for her contributions to space research through an award from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

As human space exploration expands towards the Moon, Mars and beyond, protecting astronauts from the health risks associated with space radiation remains a critical challenge.
This presentation will provide an overview of the space radiation environment, sources of human radiation exposure, applicable dose limits and the associated short- and long-term health risks. It will explore the challenges of assessing and managing radiation exposure in space, highlighting the importance of radiation protection strategies to support safe and sustainable human exploration.
The presentation will also showcase how ANSTO contributes to research on the biological effects of radiation and supports the development of radiation protection approaches and countermeasures to mitigate risks to astronauts on future space missions.
