    Radiological Controls Technician

    ASC is Australia’s submarine company. We built the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarines, sustain them. We have also been selected by the Australian Government to sustain and jointly build the nation’s conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines – the largest and most complex industrial undertaking in Australia’s history.

    We have immediate opportunities for skilled people to undertake world-leading training in the United States (U.S), setting you up for a secure career back home in the nuclear-powered submarine program - Australia's largest-ever industrial endeavour.

    You will have access to cutting edge training in Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) for 2-3 years, with some roles completing placements at other locations throughout the USA during the full course of the assignment.

    Role & Responsibilities

    Working in Radiological Controls you will: conduct radiation surveys, implement control procedures related to transport/storage/treatment of radiological waste, monitoring of equipment, recommend changes to improve controls/correct deficiencies/increase efficiency; and you will ensure adherence to the radiological control requirements.

    You will be immersed into the United States Navy processes, procedures and working on the Virginia Class systems in Pearl Harbour or other U.S locations. You will also undertake a combination of instructor led classroom-based training and on the job learning.

    At the completion of your deployment, you will return to Western Australia to carry out the planning, management, and in-water maintenance activities on the United States Navy Virginia Class Submarines.

    Please note this is a Civilian role and recruitment processes will differ from those undertaken in Active Service Defence recruitment.

     

    Eligibility Criteria

    The successful person will possess:

    • Bachelors Degree in Physical Sciences / Maths/ Health or Work experience in the health sector in a relevant field
    • Experience in Radiology/Radiological controls is highly desirable but not essential.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance to NV1 level,
    • Eligibility to obtain an A2 working VISA and International Training Order (ITO) in the US,
    • Strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
    • Must be an Australian Citizen.
    • Must be able to hold an NV1 Security Clearance.

    This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearance.

    About Safe Radiation

    Safe Radiation Pty Ltd is a small business in workplace and environmental radiation safety. Established since 2006, it has been providing a range of services to clients Australia wide. Safe Radiation office and laboratory are in the suburb of Browns Plains, Queensland. In addition to working in the lab and behind the desk, the staff sometimes conduct on-site services and field work as required. Field work may occasionally involve travel around Australia, potentially overseas, which can include working at industrial sites such as processing plants, mines, or outdoors in rural or bush terrain.

    Safe Radiation has a dose rate monitor calibration facility that is certified traceable to the Australian primary standard of radiation exposure.     At Safe Radiation, we take pride in our recognition. Safe Radiation staff have

    Main purpose

    The main reasons for Safe Radiation seeking fresh staff are (i) to fill a gap created through the departure of an employee, and (ii) to meet the needs of expanding the scope of services to cover various aspects of radiation safety. Safe Radiation is likely to consider suitable team members for full time, part time, and casual employment. The preferred choice is to have a permanent part-time team member, working for four days per week for most weeks, and available for occasional travel away from Brisbane.

    Role

    Being an active member of a small team, a Technical Officer / Scientific Officer is likely to undertake a multi-tasking role. The following is important.

    Interaction with professionals in other organisations, including the competitors. Talking to the clients, and with different service providers. Engaging with other staff, including the casual staff as required in the field and the lab environment. Working independently in the lab and at some client sites. Occasionally being the sole person in the lab or office. Calibrating diverse types of dose rate meters. Carrying out minor repairs, often involving soldering of components. Basic IT knowledge to be able tokeep lab and office computers and a network-based storage operational. Reading and uploading reports for the clients. Managing and taking part in the development of routine reporting templates. Managing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). Most templates and reporting are based upon the use of advanced MS Word, and Excel. Other computer programs and CAD drawings are sometimes needed for graphing and graphic purpose. The ability to learn new software as it becomes necessary. Conducting field work with due diligence of data recording, equipment handling, and transport. Searching and ordering materials and equipment needed for field and lab use.

    Ability to plan own work in support of achieving Safe Radiation priorities. Ability to quickly adjust with changes and propose realistic contingency plans, when needed. Actively contribute to achieving team results and support team decisions.

    Adhere to safe work practice and follow the required written and verbal instructions regarding safety, including radiation safety.

    Written and verbal communication in a concise and pleasant manner, through various means, including meetings, small group discussions with staff or clients, reports, and emails. Take time to listen to and understand the perspectives of others. Convey appropriate answers including redirecting the enquiries to other staff members if required. Search desirable information through internet, websites, and other means.

    Knowledge sharing

    Actively share knowledge and information with Safe Radiation team members; effectively learn from experience across different situations and contexts. Respect and care for conflict of interest and confidentiality needs for work-related information.

    Technical credibility

    Ensure that work is conducted in compliance with the standards and methods.

    Educational

    Completed or nearly completing studies equivalent to a university degree in a relevant discipline, such as major in Physics, or Engineering. Knowledge about ionising radiation safety is not essential but desirable. A demonstrated interest in the use of radiation detection techniques will be considered.     The Role
    The Radiation Safety Advisor is a specialised safety role as part of the WHS Strategy and Assurance team and larger Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) WHS Enabling Capability team. The Radiation Safety Advisor works with Science & Technology staff to foster a positive and collaborative environment and to ensure radiation safety. The Radiation Safety Advisor will provide key support on radiation safety and compliance matters impacting the Fishermans Bend site. This is an exciting radiation safety role for someone looking to become a radiation safety specialist.

    You will spend your days:

    • Assisting to provide advice on the application of radiation protection legislation and relevant Defence policies to unique and innovative applications of radiation

    • Assisting with radiation source audits and inspections
    • Assisting with investigations of radiation events using the Defence Sentinel platform.

    • Assisting the DSTG Radiation Safety Officer with radiation safety related tasks as required.

    WHS Strategy and Assurance provides specialised safety services to support operational capability in DSTG.  As part of the larger DSTG Research Safety Enabling Capability team, WHS Strategy and Assurance supports safety in Hazardous Chemicals and Radiation, as well as supporting safety systems and incident investigations.

    What we are looking for
    Knowledge and experience
    • Knowledge of radioactive decay processes. 
    • Knowledge of radiation dose assessment concepts and methods. 
    • Experience conducting or contributing to research in the field of radioecology or radiation protection. 
    • Experience analysing radionuclide data. 
    • Experience presenting research findings at conferences and/or as an author on journal publications.

    Skills and capabilities
    • Ability to plan and manage scientific research projects, including completing them to specified timelines. 
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and as part of a multidisciplinary research institute. 
    • Ability to plan and undertake field work in remote locations for durations of up to a week at a time. 
    • Sound technical writing skills as well as the ability to produce plain English summaries of technical information.

    • Experience conducting radiological impact assessments for the public and the environment, preferably in a uranium mining context. 
    • Experience managing staff. 
    • Experience leading and managing scientific research projects and associated resources. 
    • Proven record of high-quality research papers in the field of radioecology and/or radiation protection.

    Skills and capabilities
    • Leadership skills that inspire a good sense of teamwork and achieve results. 
    • Ability to manage staff, resources, timelines and budgets. 
    • Ability to train and mentor staff to build capability and capacity in radiological impact assessment. 
    • Ability to establish and foster research collaborations with other government agencies, industry and/or universities. 
    • Ability to represent the organisation nationally and internationally at scientific forums and on expert working groups. 
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and as part of a larger multidisciplinary environmental research institute. 
    • Ability to plan and undertake field work in remote locations for durations of up to a week at a time. 
    • Highly developed technical writing skills as well as the ability to produce plain English summaries of technical information. 
    • Ability to communicate science to technical and non-technical audiences.

    Mandatory Qualifications
    •    A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from an Australian University or qualification of equivalent standard from an Australian or overseas university, or other qualification appropriate to the duties

    Your Duties and Responsibilities

    • Effective leadership of staff, budget and resources; and the development and implementation of strategies to improve work practices, systems and processes to ensure the delivery of high-quality services and outcomes.
    • Project manage and oversee aspects of Radiation Protection Services’ development and implementation, including preparing project plans and reports, establishing appropriate governance, identifying, allocating and managing available resources, to ensure project outcomes are achieved on time, on budget, to quality standards.
    • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities, working consultatively and collaboratively with project leaders, clients, and high reliability staff to establish productive working relationships and foster the communication of experiences and knowledge across different divisions.
    • Provide authoritative and expert advice to the NSSS Senior Leadership on the formulation of strategies and policies related to the Section's technical responsibilities and facilitating their implementation to support the achievement of international best practice.
    • Ensure a Through Life Capability Project Management approach to all radiation and nuclear new build and decommissioning activities.
