    The role is part of a larger regulatory team responsible for providing advice on the regulation of sources, prescribed radiation facilities and nuclear installations undertaken by Australian Government entities and their contractors.  The position provides an opportunity to contribute to regulatory reform and build productive and sustainable relationships with ARPANSA’s stakeholders.

    To be considered for this position, you must possess a science or engineering degree from an Australian university or comparable overseas qualifications or have equivalent experience in a regulatory or operational role.  It is also desirable to have experience in radiation protection.

    Regulatory Radiation Monitoring & Reporting

    ·           Undertake radiation monitoring, ensuring all regulatory monitoring is completed in accordance with the Radiation Management Plan (RMP) and Radioactive Waste Management Plan (RWMP).

    Shared Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) Responsibilities:

    • Undertake monitoring, and sample collection and analysis.

    Essential Qualifications

    ·           Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) majoring in physics or occupational hygiene.

    Desirable Qualifications

    ·           Licence to Use or Handle a Radioactive Substances (inc. Sealed Sources).

    ·           IMDG Code – Dangerous Goods by Sea.

    Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

    ·           Knowledge of radiation, and radiation protection.

    ·           Competency of software packages including MS Office (Word, Access, and Excel).

    Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

    The Senior Regulatory Officer, Safety Systems is responsible for the maintenance of the RSB Quality Management System and will perform the duties of the RSB Quality Officer. The role will also have compliance monitoring responsibilities including planning, managing, and undertaking inspections of ARPANSA licence holders. The role will be responsible for management of the regulatory content on the ARPANSA website in collaboration with the Office of the CEO and will review outgoing correspondence and reports for quality assurance purposes. 

    Key accountabilities

    • Perform the role of the RSB Quality Officer, including maintenance of the RSB Quality System within the ARPANSA Management System.
    • Lead, manage and undertake inspections, audits and other activities associated with ARPANSA’s regulatory functions with regards to nuclear installations, prescribed radiation facilities and sources.

    Te tūnga | The role

    We have a full-time permanent (minimum of 37.5 to 40 hours per week) opportunity for a Senior Scientist – Radiation Safety to join the National Centre for Radiation Science (NCRS) team at our Kenepuru Science Centre in Porirua, Wellington.  

    In this role your principal responsibility will be to lead the NCRS team’s activities in relation to the National Radiation Store which ESR manages on behalf of Manatū Hauora Ministry of Health, which includes ensuring all contractual requirements are delivered.

    You may also be involved in:

    • Providing expert advice to key stakeholders including government and users of ionising radiation across the public and private sectors.

    • Assisting with the provision of commercial services including training and consultancy.

    • Conducting regulatory compliance on-site inspections across multiple industries.

    • Preparing regulatory, technical and scientific reports.

    • Participating in an on-call (24/7) emergency response roster to provide technical advice and support during radiological incidents, accidents and emergencies.

    • Collaborating with other senior members of the NCRS Radiation Safety team to lead the team, mentor more junior staff, and develop business strategy.

    To be successful in this role you will have:

    • A relevant postgraduate qualification or an industry recognised qualification.

    • At least 10 years practical experience in the radiation safety / radiation protection field.

    • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal), including the communication of risk and risk management strategies, to non-scientific audiences.

    • Demonstrated commitment to safety.

    • Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with both external and internal stakeholders.

    • Demonstrated experience of managing contentious issues.

    • You will be self-motivated and able to work independently.

    • You will be able to undertake domestic travel, often for 5 days away from home, on a regular basis.

    • Collaboration and teamwork skills to work with other departments, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders.

    • Understanding and knowledge of national and international regulations governing the use and storage of radioactive materials.

    • You must be able to obtain and maintain a New Zealand national security clearance at the SECRET level.

    • You must have a full drivers licence
