About the opportunity

As Australia’s newest uranium producer, we’re growing and looking for an experienced Environment and Radiation Advisor (ER) join our ER team at the Honeymoon mine site in South Australia.

Reporting to the Environment & Radiation (ER) Superintendent, you’ll oversee the completion of environmental and radiation monitoring and management requirements, ensuring compliance with regulatory and non-regulatory standards.

In addition, you’ll proactively report and mitigate risks related to environmental and radiation hazards and support the entire operations team showing leadership by providing expertise, guidance and training, to support a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible mining operation.

Radiation experience is experience is essential.

The role will be FIFO from the Adelaide charter terminal or Port Augusta, direct to site on an 8:6 roster.  (We may consider other rosters.)

In terms of specific responsibilities, you will:

• Complete inspections to identify, monitor and manage environmental risks and ensure compliance with EPA licences, legislation, regulatory approvals and internal procedures. 
• Assist with timely review and management of all environmental and radiation hazards and incidents.
• Complete environmental monitoring, analysis and reporting, as detailed in the PEPR.
• Complete radiation monitoring, analysis and reporting as per the site Radiation Management Plan and Radioactive Waste Management Plan.
• Assist in managing the environmental and radiation database, including entering field data and external data reports, QA/QC checks, and assessments against compliance limits.
• Immediately raise and appropriately manage regulatory compliance breaches and/or internal action or investigation level breaches.

About You

What you’ll need:

• A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science or related field.
• Significant experience in environmental and radiation monitoring in mining.
• Sound knowledge of environmental and radiation legislation.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse and troubleshoot complex issues.

The Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) provides specialist technical advice to the Supervising Scientist on the protection of the environment and people of the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) from the effects of uranium mining. The primary function of ERISS is to conduct research into developing standards and leading practice methodologies for monitoring and assessing the environmental impact of uranium mining in the ARR. Research programs include: water and sediment quality; ecosystem restoration and landform; and environmental radioactivity.

The key duties of the position include:

• Manage the day-to-day operation of the radiochemistry and alpha spectrometry laboratories, including staff, resources, workflow, data and records, procurements, commercial contracts and WHS requirements. 
• Apply complex wet chemistry techniques to prepare environmental samples for low-level radionuclide analysis. 
• Install and maintain alpha spectrometry equipment and use it to measure the radionuclide content of prepared samples and calculate and report results.

The Office of the Supervising Scientist is responsible for protecting the environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. We conduct independent research and monitoring, participate in and oversee the regulatory process for uranium mining in the region and develop standards and practices for environmental protection.

The Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist conducts world-class research for monitoring and assessing the environmental impacts of uranium mining. We are a multidisciplinary institute with research programs spanning environmental radiation, water and sediment quality, ecosystem restoration, geomorphology, omics, drone remote sensing and environmental applications of artificial intelligence. 

Our Radiation program focuses on assessing the radiation impacts to the public and the environment from uranium mining activities. Our technical capabilities and work program include: 

• low level radiochemistry, alpha and gamma spectrometry laboratories, 
• measurement of natural decay series radionuclides in air, soil, water and biota (including Aboriginal bush foods), 
• radiation surveys of legacy and rehabilitated uranium mining sites, 
• modelling and assessment of radiation exposure pathways to the public and non-human biota from the dispersion and transfer of radionuclides in the environment, 
• provision of technical advice on regulatory applications for uranium mining and other radiation-related actions,

As the Team Leader Radiation, you will: 

• Lead and manage the work program of the radiation team (staff, budget, projects and resources) to ensure the safe and timely delivery of research and monitoring which informs the assessment of radiation impacts to people and the environment from uranium mining activities.
• Apply expert judgement and technical knowledge to determine sampling and analysis requirements to meet research and monitoring objectives, undertake field and laboratory work as required to collect and analyse samples.
