    Primary purpose of the role

    In this role, you will work under limited supervision and perform a range of moderately complex tasks associated with operating and maintaining Australia’s radiation monitoring networks.  These include radionuclide air monitoring and noble gas stations that form part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) International Monitoring System (IMS), the Ultraviolet (UV) radiation network, and the Australian Radiation Monitoring System (ARMS). You will work closely with the technical lead providing maintenance and development support for hardware and software associated with the radionuclide monitoring systems. You will be working as part of a small team, delivering high quality and timely data to the CTBT International Data Centre (IDC) and other stakeholders. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing reports as well as establishing and maintaining a high degree of documentation management and record keeping.

     Key accountabilities

    • Under limited supervision and using established principles, practices and procedures, undertake a range of moderately complex tasks associated with the ongoing development of Australia’s CTBT air monitoring and noble gas stations, UV network and ARMS network; 
    • Assist in the maintenance and upgrading of station equipment, relating to the operation of ARPANSA’s networks, including field work; 
    • Maintain, in conjunction with the digital services section, software relating to ARPANSA’s networks;
    • Liaise with operational and technical staff from organisations contracted to assist with the running of ARPANSA’s radiation monitoring networks; 
    • Develop technical procedural documents.

    Job specific capabilities

    To be considered for this position, you will have experience in operating and maintaining large complex data acquisition systems. You will have exceptional problem-solving skills as well as experience working as part of a team, including with representatives from other organisations, both national and international, in order to achieve a common goal.

    You will have technical knowledge and experience working within the specialist area of High Resolution Gamma detectors including associated spectral data logging systems. You will be proficient in diagnosing and repairing these systems and other associated data acquisition systems. Experience maintaining and developing software for use in supporting a large multi-layered network would be an advantage.

    You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship.   ARPANSA requires all new employees to undertake a baseline security clearance as a condition of engagement. This role will require extensive travel throughout Australia and overseas, including remote locations such as Antarctica. As such, COVID-19 vaccination recognised by the Australian Government will be a requirement for the role.

    Primary purpose of the role

    ARPANSA is seeking an enthusiastic individual to work as part of a small team of scientists within its Medical Imaging Section to contribute to the development of national diagnostic reference levels (DRLs), evaluate radiation doses, risks and image quality for various imaging modalities, provide scientific input to the processing and issuing of import permits for medical radioisotopes, and assist in the conduct of measurements and tests on medical imaging equipment and accessories.

     Key accountabilities

    • Participate in the performance of an ongoing program of national surveys of diagnostic radiation equipment, dosimetry, and development of diagnostic reference levels, contributing to the design and implementation of surveys, the operation of data collection programs, and the interpretation of results.
    • Provide scientific contributions on matters relating to diagnostic medical imaging, including evaluation of doses to patients, diagnostic reference levels, radiation protection of the patient, suitability of equipment and facility design.
    • Provide scientific input to the processing and issuing of permits for the importation of radioisotopes for use in medical procedures.
    • Interact with professional interest groups, educational institutions and other organisations relating to diagnostic imaging techniques and equipment.
    • Assist with a wide variety of measurements and tests on medical imaging equipment and accessories for calibration, safety assessment, compliance testing and evaluation of new technologies.

    Job specific capabilities

    To be considered for this position you must possess a degree from an Australian tertiary institution in a branch of the physical sciences, or comparable overseas qualifications, or other alternative qualifications and experience appropriate to the duties.

    You should possess qualifications that will entitle membership of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) and/or meet the registration requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

    You should have a sound knowledge of radiation physics, dosimetry, and the principles of radiation protection in the medical uses of ionising radiation. You should be able to undertake experimental tests of equipment in a laboratory setting and have demonstrated experience and ability in writing scientific and/or technical documents. A good knowledge of medical exposures, patient dosimetry and the risks from low-level radiation exposures are highly desirable. Recent relevant clinical experience is also highly desirable. High level computing, data analysis and statistical skills would be an advantage.

    You will have the ability to work independently or with limited guidance forming part of a small team of scientific and technical-based staff engaged in the measurement of radioactivity in environmental samples and the radiological surveillance of the Australian environment.

    About the Opportunity

    The Laboratory Assistant is to maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of a suite of Scientific facilities and laboratories, ensuring they meet our operating standards and customer requirement. Additionally, you will contribute to the facility and laboratory operations through performing basic laboratory support tasks, such as chemical inventory management, basic procurement and goods receipt, preparation and revision of quality and safety documentation, and equipment and chemical registers in the areas of responsibility.

    Your Duties and Responsibilities

    Responsible for routine and non-routine cleaning of all facilities to ensure proper function, and compliance (quality, safety and regulatory), and to meet user expectations and requirement.

    • Maintain and undertake the preparation and cleaning of specialised facilities to cleanroom standards to enable production and testing of radiopharmaceuticals and radioisotopes.
    • Responsible for the collection of waste and the subsequent categorization, sorting to align with ANSTO waste management practice, and active and non-active laundry management.
