The Role
As the Ionising Radiation Hazard Manager, you will work with an innovative team that develops tools and techniques to implement best practice radiation protection for Defence personnel. You will be responsible for developing products to assist with the compliance and safety of ionising radiation sources used by Defence in military operations, health, research and waste management. This will include the development and implementation of radiation safety policy, technical oversight of the ionising radiation hazards, providing technical advice in the development of licence applications and regulatory approval requests, research and incident investigation. You will be part of a small team and will enjoy the freedom of a relatively autonomous environment, with support where required.

This position is located in Canberra however remote working arrangements may be accommodated for the successful applicant.

Purpose of the Position:

Reporting to the Operations Manager and Leadership Team, this role is a senior technical position, responsible for the integrity of RSWA radiological advice and will include the mentoring and development of RSWA’s radiation consultants.

The Radiochemist provides expert contribution to the Radiochemistry capabilities of the Biosciences platform, by undertaking research and development to enable the delivery of new radiopharmaceuticals and radioisotopes for research and commercial users.  The position contributes to the development, enhancement, and sustainability of the Biosciences platform capabilities in radiopharmaceutical and radioisotope optimisation, validation and manufacture, radiolabelling with therapeutic and diagnostic radioisotopes and radioanalytical measurements and separations.

About You

• Higher degree (PhD) in radiochemistry, synthetic or medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences or other relevant discipline.

Primary purpose of the position

Operating under general direction and in collaboration with the Director, Medical Imaging, this role will support the overall strategic direction and operational activity of the Medical Imaging section. Critical to this role will be the management of aspects of the design, implementation and analysis of national surveys of patient radiation doses in diagnostic imaging, including nuclear medicine.  The Assistant Director will also manage and/or participate in projects and research to develop measurement and theoretical techniques for assessing patient doses in diagnostic imaging procedures.   The role also contributes to the development of Australian and international standards and codes of practice.

Key accountabilities

• Lead aspects of the design, implementation, and analysis of national surveys to determine radiation doses to Australians from diagnostic imaging
• Lead and/or make significant contributions to projects that research and develop measurement and theoretical techniques for assessing patient radiation dose in diagnostic imaging procedures
• Contribute to the development and writing of national codes of practice, safety guides and other radiation protection documents
• Provide authoritative advice on radiation protection issues in medicine including patient and operator doses and risks, suitability of equipment and radiation shielding
• Contribute to the strategic direction of the section, represent the section on internal ARPANSA committees, and participate in external committees, conferences, and workshops of national and international relevance
• Manage other routine activities of the section, such as the processing of applications for import permits for medical radioisotopes, and the maintenance of business support systems.

Job specific capabilities

To be considered for this position you must possess a degree from an Australian tertiary institution in a branch of the physical sciences, or comparable overseas qualifications or other alternative qualifications and experience appropriate to the duties.  A postgraduate degree would be an advantage.

You should possess qualifications that will entitle membership of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) and/or meet the registration requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

You should have a sound knowledge of radiation physics, dosimetry, international radiation safety philosophy and the principles of radiation protection in the medical uses of ionising radiation. A good knowledge of medical exposures, patient dosimetry and the risks from low-level radiation exposures are highly desirable. Recent relevant clinical experience is also highly desirable. High level computing, data analysis and statistical skills would be an advantage.  You should also have demonstrated experience and ability in writing scientific and/or technical documents.

You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate from time to time as required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to undertake a baseline security clearance as a condition of engagement.
