    About the Role
    The Site Contamination Officer will be required to critically review and assess reports held by and presented to the EPA. The Site Contamination Officer will undertake various projects, investigations and assignments and provide associated administrative support on issues relating to site contamination and associated statutory requirements under the Environment Protection Act 1993.

    Primary purpose of the role

    Under broad direction from the Branch Head, the Director Source Safety and Security is responsible for regulation of radiation sources held by Commonwealth source licence holders to ensure compliance with the ARPANS Act and Regulations. The role is also responsible for management and coordination of import and exports of radioactive sources into and out of Australia under the Customs (Prohibited Imports and Exports) Regulations, security of sources and physical protection arrangements, including transport of radioactive sources.

    Key accountabilities

    • Lead, manage, and provide strategic direction to the Source Safety and Security Section, including designing, planning and executing a compliance monitoring regime for radiation sources
    • Provide high level support to the CEO of ARPANSA, through the Branch Head and EG, in areas of technical policy development, including the development of radiation protection and nuclear safety guidelines
    • Lead, manage and undertake inspections, audits and other activities associated with ARPANSA’s regulatory functions with regards to radiation sources, prescribed radiation facilities and nuclear installations
    • Manage and coordinate import and export of radioactive sources in to and out of Australia in conjunction with the State and Territory regulators
    • Represent ARPANSA and Australia at appropriate national and international forums

    Our ideal candidate - job specific capabilities

    The successful applicant will have highly developed managerial skills with a demonstrated record of successfully driving change and being able to respond flexibly and promptly to organisational changes. The applicant must also be capable of developing and motivating staff to successfully contribute to the business outcomes of the Branch and the Agency.

    The applicant must have a degree in science or engineering from an Australian university or alternative, or have comparable qualifications or equivalent experience. The applicant must also have excellent communication and consultation skills and expertise in writing scientific and/or technical documents.

    You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate and internationally as required. The position is a designated security assessed position which will require you to successfully undertake and maintain a security clearance.

    Selection criteria

    There are five main selection criteria for this role. Applicants are asked to provide a statement of claims of no more than 1000 words, addressing all selection criteria below.

    1. Demonstrated leadership capability to manage professional, technical and administrative staff to deliver organisational strategic outcomes
    2. Demonstrated experience in operational or regulatory activities relating to radiation protection and/or nuclear safety

     The Health Physics Surveyor provides hands-on safety advice and monitoring services to a range of operational areas to ensure the safety of staff, contractors and visitors; and compliance with ANSTO's WHS Standards and Practices, and with regulatory requirements.

    Your Duties and Responsibilities

    Monitor and measure radiation levels and advise on radiological hazards, provide ventilation safety advice, log information to ensure QA compliance.

    • Provide advice to different levels of personnel on the most effective practical radiation protection measures to be taken across a large and varied range of situations. This advice is based on defined policies and procedures within a set range of parameters.
    • Deliver basic radiation safety training to other ANSTO staff, including trainee safety officers and describe work procedures to non-ANSTO visitors.

    About the opportunity

    Purpose of the Position

    Reporting to the Operations Manager, this role is a technical position, delivering niche radiation protection advice for clients and to RSWA.  

    We are currently seeking an individual who has experience in:

    • Occupational Hygiene
    • Health Safety and Environment practice
    • Environmental Science
    • Radiation Protection

    You will work alongside our Project Managers and Radiation Protection Expert (RPE) to implement Radiation Management solutions and deliver outcomes while benefiting from on-the-job training and mentoring.

    You will also work with the Operations Manager to seek out new business and deliver on RSWA operational objectives including continual improvement in delivery of RSWA products and services.

    The role is Perth based but will include travel within Australia to client sites as required.


    Main Responsibilities

    • Conduct audits and inspections of relevant systems of work
    • Carry out field trips for assessment and monitoring of clients’ sites
    • Provide written reports and recommendations based on field assessment
    • Work with the Operations Manager to implement RSWA‘s radiological procedures
    • Regularly review federal codes and regulations for updates/amendments
    • Involvement in operational risk assessments, as required
    • Continuous improvement of existing radiation protection systems
    • Where relevant, participate in delivery of HSEQ training, including inductions

    ABOUT THE ROLE

    Tronox is seeking an Occupational Hygiene and Radiation Safety Specialist based at any of our Western Australian sites. This is a permanent position, reporting directly to the Regional Director of SHEQ. This role works across our Western Australian sites leading the Occupational Hygiene Testing program and Radiation Safety Programs.     • Liaise with Environmental and Remediation teams on environmental radiation matters.
    • Support and provide advice to new projects where radiation is a risk factor.

     

    ABOUT YOU

    • Tertiary qualifications in a discipline approved by the State Mining Engineer for appointment as Radiation Safety Officer (NORM), with a thorough understanding of leading occupational hygiene management.
    • Experience in the mining industry including dealing with Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials.
    • A track record in achieving high levels of occupational hygiene performance.
    • In-depth understanding and application of WA mine legislation.
    • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills at all levels.
    • You must be flexible with your time and approach and willing to travel within the state.

    Qualifications and Certifications

    • Degree qualification in chemistry, materials or chemical engineering or another relevant technical field
    • Certification in nuclear engineering, radiochemistry or another relevant technical field is highly desirable
